Haemoglobin (HbA1c) medical test

Learn about Haemoglobin (HbA1c) medical tests, including what the tests are used for, why a doctor may order a test, how a test will feel, and what the results may mean.

What is Haemoglobin (HbA1c)?

The haemoglobin A1c test tells you your average level of blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months. It's also called HbA1c, glycated haemoglobin test, and glycohemoglobin. People who have diabetes need this test regularly to see if their levels are staying within range. It can tell if you need to adjust your diabetes medicines. The A1c test is also used to diagnose diabetes.

What the Haemoglobin (HbA1c) test used for?

An HbA1c test may be used to check for diabetes or prediabetes in adults. Prediabetes means your blood sugar levels show you are at risk for getting diabetes.

How is the procedure performed?

To measure a person’s HbA1c level, a blood sample is taken from the patient’s arm, and used to produce a reading. In some cases, such as with HbA1c testing for children, a single droplet of blood may only be required to find out how much haemoglobin A1c is present.
